Who are we ?
We are Ron and Lucy McCasland and we live in Saranac Lake, NY
- smack dab in the middle of the Adirondack Mountains. We are vanners, collectors and travellers of the blue highways - those secondary roads that take you through life at a slower and more scenic pace. Our interests include diners, collectable toys and nostalgic memorabilia. We are fans of the legendary Rt. 66 and try

to travel a portion of the historic highway each year. We are no longer youngsters - I am 60 years old and Lucy is slightly younger. We are employed at a medical research institute and have to plan our travels around our vacation schedule and our limited paychecks.

What is "Knighty's Knotebook" ?
"Knighty's Knotebook" - the knightly news of vanning - was the name of a monthly column that I wrote for "ON THE TRAIL" - a recreational newspaper published in Syracuse, NY by Janel Hansen. The column was an offshoot of a club newsletter that I began many years ago to keep in contact with our van club Northeast Custom Vans. Over the years, as interests grew and I had more requests to be added to my mailing list, the number of subscribers grew to about 100 - a lot of work for a newsletter that was cranked out on a manual typewriter, photocopied and mailed - all during our lunch breaks. The opportunity to write for "ON THE TRAIL" gave me a chance to spend more time writing and less time publishing. I am not really a writer in my minds eye, but I am having a lot of fun playing one in real life! We hope that our articles will serve the vanning public well.

Knighty's Knotebook is now on-line!

Can I submit items to "Knighty's Knotebook" ?
We actively solicit information from the vanning public. In each issue you will see articles and reports that have been submitted via e-mail or sent by "snail mail". Our goal is to help spread the "knews" about vanning to all who wish to read it. You may contact me at

What vans do you own ?

We have two vans, at the present time. The Chevy is a 1976 G-10, that we have owned for 21 years. It has been extensively customized, most recently with several more body modifications, new paint and murals. Modifications include moulded rear panel, split and louvered hoods, gull wing side door, Corvair taillights and a handformed front that carries '76 Pontiac headlights. It is presently awaiting a new interior that I will install in my home shop - "Streetable Interiors East". This van is named "Knighty Knight".
Our other van is a 1995 Ford Aerostar that we named "Ronaway" after a contest that we ran in our column. The winning entry was submitted by "Rebel", from Loonie Tunes Truckers in Fords, NJ. He based it on the old Del Shannon song from the 50's - "My Little Runaway". We prefer the smaller van for some of the longer trips because it has cruise control and air conditioning, and also because it gets 23-25 mpg.

What are some other web sites I might enjoy ?
  • Vannin.Com
    • is the site for Dave Astro's fabulous vanning site. From here you can access all the vannin sites you will ever need -including Beer Bob's Vannernet. Be sure to check the guestbook for the latest comments from other vanners.
  • VannerNET!
    • is the spot for "Beer Bob's" Vannernet. Here you'll find event listings and information along with locations for other van home pages. It's a must bookmark site for any vanner!
  • Road Side Magazine
    • tells you about this diner magazine that covers the american diners - those lunchcarts that were the favored place for the average person to eat before the advent of fast (not necessarily good) food. It is jam-packed with diner information and locations and has led us to make our kitchen into a facsimile diner - "Lucy's Diner". Visitors are encouraged whenever we are home; call for reservations at (518) 891-3093.
  • Out West
    • is where you will find "Out West" - the newspaper that roams. This journal covers the western half of the country and is replete with unusual photographs, offbeat news items and the western blue highways. Even easterners will enjoy this paper.
  • Two Lane Roads
    • Formerly "Heartland Highways". Editor Loren Eyrich travels in a motorhome that he dubbed C.O.W. (Condo On Wheels). He is based in Florida and makes several cross-country trips each year. He rides the secondary roads and always has an interesting tale to tell. A very enjoyable read for those of us addicted to the "Backroad Boogie"!
