AED's are pretty foolproof (in EMS we call them firefighter-proof)and it would be best to rent rather than buy if possible as the batteries are REALLY expensive. Of course, inviting your local volunteer fire department out to an event can't hurt either. Remember, my "other" van has lights and siren!

Doc...I work full time Ambulance, I love covering events during the year, solo. Staging an Ambulance can be expensive, but getting a local volunteer can be free. The service sponsors me liability wise, I'm on duty (no drinking frown ) but I get free food and pop from some of the vender's, a t-shirt and some other perks depending. (pocket change for a big event) One event gives me a ATV to put all my gear and AED on. AEDs are great but having a trained person there is so much better. 99% of my calls have nothing to do with anything so serious. I agree with Superdave and others, check with local emergency responders during the event planning stage, you might get lucky! Definitely can't hurt to try.
I recommend this for all events, whether you get an AED or not.

Thank that is a great idea. Had 3 heart attacks one at a van meet myself and I am only 47 had first one at old age of 25 at a van run. Did not Know what it was on till I had a big one at 37. When your heart stops you want a Defibrillator. hurts like hell. I find going down south in summer is hell on me. Have to stay in shade and take it easy. still party like hell at night.
