I'd put my 7.3 Diesel up against any GM engine as far as reliability.

No, but I believe the 7.3 diesel engine is one awesome motor. The GM 350 is also a great motor, the Dodge 318 is a great engine, etc., etc. They all have great engines and they all had some crappy ones.

From everything I read online and heard from friends over here, a 3 (Ford, GM and Dodge) have made some awesome engines... some so iconic that they're being made by other companies... and these guys have made some duds too...

However more noise has been made about how Chevy / GM ones standing out as being more simpler in design and therefore more plentiful in number and easier in terms of maintenance and parts.
In some ways I think its right in the sense that even BBC's Top Gear recognized the Chevy small-block as a masterpiece...
But on the other hand when doing the review of a new MGT, the Ford mustang engine was called as one of the worlds greatest engines...

So looks like they're even and the noise wasn't justified... or is it????

Well pretty much what everyone said above is true with all that talk about the gm 350 as far as cost goes, it's prolly the best deal going as far as performance and economy.

I have no doubt that what they say about the 350 is true. No doubt it has proven itself. Maybe the same can be said of the LS engines. 'Cos I want a modern engine with electronic fuel injection and timing chain, etc...

But what about Ford? Won't I be able to get the same kind of bang for my bucks?

If you want to go with a Ford then you would prolly be best using a 5.0 out of a newer mustang. Lots of stuff available for them.

I just saw the new Green Hornet movie. I was impressed to hear that they used a Chevy ZZ / 454 custom V8 for the engine. Being a Chrysler Imperial, I thought they'd use a Hemi engine. The noise of a Hemi would be awesome on a car like that.
But I now see that when someone thinks replacing the engine in a car, the first choice is always a Chevy (for the obvious reasons stated before lol).

Do Ford V8s and Hemi V8s have a reputation of being a hassle to sort out and everyone chooses Chevy V8s just for peace of mind???
