now that I finally have a garage, I'm finally getting all my tools in the same place, instead of being scattered between 2 vans, the basement, the closet, etc....
I have a TON of lose sockets and am looking for feedback on the various methods of keeping them organized.
I have seen the metal strips that they clip on, magnetic trays, etc...
just curious what everyone's preference is and why

Right now, I just have them all in a couple drawers in my big roller cabinet.


What I am going to do is put some 2X4's in the drawers, with holes drilled for the sockets to drop into. I also want to router grooves for the ratchets and extensions.

And right after that, I want to sprout wings and fly.

I have a huge assortment of sockets (300+ I counted while cleaning up the garage) and other than the spring clip bars there's nothing available that they all fit in well.

May also just make a plywood base with dowels for the sockets to sit on.
Did see a neat setup wall mounted with dowels at about a 15 degree upward angle for the sockets.

I could get a 1/4" thick piece of plywood and cut it to fit the drawer in the toolbox and bore holes for the sockets..

im thinking blue sheet foam if it fits

seems like that would deteriorate quickly, be easy to damage.

maybe not the exterior stuff u know for basements im gonna get around to it someday for my clamps

I use the clip style bars in my boxes.
they make then for 1/4,3/8and 1/2inch drive sockets.
I found the ones at Sears/Craftsmen work pretty good.
what i like about these is it allows you to easily pick up a whole rack of sockets and take them with you.Whether in a smaller box for a road trip or for a small job in the drive way.
The wood and dowel rod work great if these sockets are staying put.
A friend of mine had an open top tray,shallow box that they sell in his shop.He had his sockets set up like that.
I used to kid him because his sockets where all Snap On's and the where mounted to wood.
That set up worked great for him.....

I really like older steel file cabinets for larger tools.saws drills,paint cans, ect,ect,
These are nice and deep and pretty strong.When closed they will keep over spray,dust and stuff out of the drawers them selves.Being metal they can also be easily custom painted to mach you garages theme.All of the ones I have where FREE.I have seen them for sale cheap
They are also stronger that the high priced cabinets made of particle board that places like sears are offering up.

a garage like your van,your only limit is what you brain can come up with.....

Yes they are.
That is an older brad of tool.They where good American made tools....

yeah, I was going through all my sockets and wrenches, and anything that said made tiawan or china went in the junk box.
majority of my stuff is craftsman.
