I had an '85 Dodge with factory air and push button controls. It is very possible problem is in the control panel itself. I had to replace mine when the buttons all of a sudden jammed. I know you say you can still push the buttons and it seems it is stuck in bi-level mode. Do the buttons feel any different? Lose? anything rattling? It is not a difficult or expensive item to repair. I believe it is a common problem since I went to a junk yard first to get a replacement and all dodge vans switches were missing. Don't have my manual handy but just a thought. GupEBoy

Any time a manual is not available, borrow a smoke generator, Sometimes Canadian Tire may lend you one, unhook any vacumn line form the engine, plug the end and run smoke through the system. The smoke will show any leaks. Since you are also having trouble with the tranny, I suspect a vacumn leak on the manifold, or the kick down system. If you have a stethoscope, take off the medical end and insert a 12 inch section of new steel brake line. With the engine running, search around the manifold and a/c controls for leaks. You will hear them .. Trust me, I am a Doctor.

Guys, Wow. You guys are so helpful on here. Nobody I hang around withup here is into vans, they all think I'm whacked! They keep telling me I got stuck in the '70's. I'm not mechanically inclined, so most of what I've done, or had done, is by my long time mechanic that charges $77.00 per hour cdn. I got ripped off buying this van out of Seattle, Chrysler dealer told me very little work needed to be done mechanically, would cost me about $2000.00 cdn. To date, since last August, $7000.00! (Enough of the whoaisme) Ken, I think the van is shown as a '77, however stamp shows 11/77 does that actually make it a '78? My other '77 had all of the same body lines, lights, grille, dash, etc as this one, the only difference is the heat/ac controls, and more vents for a/c right under stereo compartment above doghouse. My other controls are pull/push/turn cables. That and the cruise are the only differences. My other one, killed in accident, getting stripped in driveway, had a 318, 727 2bbl. This one is 440, thermalquad, 727, dana60 rearend 3:23 gears. The controls and vents are definitely factory, it even has a/c and cruise on factory sticker under hood. Turns out my mechanic thinks he found problem today while I was at work making more money to pay him. We will know foresure tommorrow. It appears controls, other than off, are vacuum controlled. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The buttons themselves appear to work fine, none loose or sticking. On another note, we found out person I bought from got rid of factory electronic and converted to points?? Distributor is shot, so buying entire new kit from Chrysler tommorrow for 350.00 cdn. Can anyone tell me if this will ever end? I would like to have SOME money left for interior, body and paint! Agian, thakn you very much for all of your help and guidance, lord knows I need it!
