When removing the harmonic balancer on a 1977 Dodge 318, will there be any problem getting the bolt loose without turning the crank /engine? Also will this be a problem when re-installing / tightening the bolt? If yes, is there a way to keep crank from turning? Or is this not something that is of concern? In other words, if the crank / engine turns slightly in one direction or another, do you have to be concerned?

Thanks, Joe

Well if you can get the bolt loose with an impact gun that would be best. You don't want to tighten the bolt up with the impact gun however, for this you'll want to use a torque wrench.

Nothing will be messed up if the crank turns slightly. You will need to somehow hold the flywheel when you tighten the crank bolt. There is a tool for this but a large screwdriver or prybar will work. You may need a friend to help you for careful not to break any of the starter ring teeth.

For loosening, I have wedged a breaker bar into the steering linkage, and bumped the engine, allowing the starter to loosen the bolt for me. If you arent that daring, I dont blame you.
Most of the impact guns out there are too long to fit, thus a radiator removal is necessary. You might be able to get by with a 24 inch extention and a swivel for retightening. I like to impact the bolt on, make good and sure its tight. This also eliminates the need to hold the flex plate or starter teeth. An electric impact gun can be rented.
The bolt size is 1 1/4, btw.

Pull the coil wire before bumping starter. If not breaker bar turning at 1500 RPM's does lots of damage. RIDE FREE
