Sir Andrew Smith was appointed to the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court of England and Wales in July 2000, and a knighthood was conferred on him. Shortly after his appointment he was nominated by the Lord Chancellor to sit in the Admiralty Court and in the Commercial Court. Between 2003 and 2006 he was Presiding Judge of the North Eastern Circuit, with responsibilities for all the courts in the Yorkshire, Humberside and the Tyne and Weir areas of England. He retired in 2016 after service in the full-time judiciary of over 16 years.
He joined the Middle Temple, and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1974. He was elected a Master of the Bench in 1999. The focus of his practice was commercial work, but more generally his practice comprised common law and chancery litigation and advisory work, and work at the Parliamentary Bar. In 1990 he was appointed a Queen’s Counsel.
