What oil filter do you run? Some brands are poorly made and lead to oil starvation due to collapsed and failed parts in the filter.

The less mechanical damage to the motor, the cheaper and easier it is to rebuild it. If you decide to keep the slant six, the best things you can do to make the slant six into an excellent truck motor are (1) 2 1/4 inch exhaust all the way back; (2) take the time to measure the head and cylinder chamber and mill the head enough to get a DYNAMIC compression ratio around 8 (there is a big difference between dynamic and static compression ratios); (3) convert to HEI ignition and fine tune the timing advance curve; (4) run synthetic oil of 5W-30 or even lighter; (5) keep the bands and kickdown adjusted right if you have an automatic transmission.
