Thanks for the kind and welcoming replies everyone! :-)
Some background might be interesting, for those not into VW's. The standard for split vans these days is an overall stock appearance, with most cars lowered quite a bit and rolling on early Porsche wheels or one of the other popular wheels. This tricked-out van is quite the opposite, and it's a so-called 'Jersey Looker'. Common features for Jersey Lookers are cut wheel wells, fender flares and side scoops. These modifications are generally regarded as 'wrong' and as something of the past in the VW community. One reason might be that they are becoming damn expensive these days, and modifications to the body are not exactly raising the values of the vehicles.
Typically Jersey Lookers are built to a very low standard, but this car is one of the few exceptions. It's actually pretty tasteful and won its share of prices back in the days according to
this page. These days, pretty much no one has the guts to build a true Jersey Looker, even though they were popular back in the 70's. It's likely that I will acquire a split bus at the end of this year, and it will be modified with the Kraut Van as the main inspiration. It will turn some heads at the events since it's totally against the grain and way cooler than those ten a penny lowered busses. :-)
